The Monster Hunter franchise is a series of action-themed video games that started with Monster Hunter for the PlayStation 2, released in 2004. The titles have been released on a variety of platforms, including PC, home console, portable consoles and mobile devices. The series is developed and published by Capcom.
Games are first and foremost role-playing games. The player takes on the role of hunting, killing or trapping large monsters in various landscapes as part of the tasks assigned to them by the locals. As part of their core gameplay loop, players use loot gained from killing monsters, gathering resources, and quest rewards to build improved weapons, armor, and other items that allow them to deal with more powerful monsters. All major series have multiplayer (usually up to four players), but can also be played as a single player.
